About Dr Q

Dr Zara QuailI, Dr Zara Quail, graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cape Town, Faculty of Health Sciences in 2002. I have since worked in primary healthcare and hospital roles in South Africa, the UK and Ireland. My work as a private GP in London is what sparked my interest in health maintenance and disease prevention. As the personal company GP to 3 eminent firms in the law, finance and advertising sectors, I gained a real appreciation of the need for health maintenance in today’s fast-paced, high-stress world.

I have also worked for eminent international medical publishing companies as a senior clinical editor working on clinical decision support tools for healthcare providers. In addition, I have done research, writing, editing and advisory work for companies involved in the use of information and communication technologies to support healthcare. Work within mHealth (mobile health) has focused on health promotion and prevention programmes.

I keep up to date with medical research and continue my study of functional medicine, health promotion and behaviour change in order to help my clients gain their maximum health potential, and feed this knowledge into health promotion communications work.

Functional medicine emphasises a definable and teachable process of integrating multiple knowledge bases within a pragmatic intellectual matrix that focuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis. Functional medicine uses the patient’s story as a key tool for integrating diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and evidence of clinical imbalances into a comprehensive approach to improve both the patient’s environmental inputs and his or her physiological function. The Institute for Functional Medicine teaches health care professional’s how to apply these principles in practice through an intensive 5 day training course called Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice™. I attended and completed the inaugural AFMCP™-SA training in Cape Town in 2012. I also did a 2-year online study course in Functional Medicine which I completed in September 2012.

In addition to being certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, I am also a certified Laughter Therapy Leader, and believe in the health benefits of laughter to counteract stress and promote a sense of complete well-being.

To keep healthy and sane, I enjoy cooking delicious food, surfing, biking, swimming, hiking, singing and playing guitar. I value social time with friends and family.
